Adolescents and Early Adulthood: Comparing Adolescents from Early Adulthood During the stages of adolescents and early adulthood there are very many various models we can look at to give us the answers of how our mind works during those stages. One of the models we can look at is the Cognitive Development model. For adolescents, they gain different many new mental tools because of a very dramatic shift from concrete to abstract thinking. Adolescents now can now analyze very different situations logically in terms of cause and effect. They can now understand and appreciate hypothetical situations, this gives them the ability to think about their future, evaluate alternatives, and let them set personal goals. The process of developing a sense of identity involves experimenting with diverse ways of appearance, the way they sound, as well as behaving. During this stage of emotional development, they need to master the skills of managing and recognizing emotions, as well as developing empathy, resolving conflict, and developing a cooperative spirit. Some specific groups of adolescents have a unique course of emotional development such as gender differences and cultural differences. Boys and girls experience different challenges in our culture and may have different emotional needs during the adolescent’s stage. Girls in the adolescent’s stage tend to have a lower self- esteem than boys. Some girls must learn how to express anger into more assertive. In contrast, boys must be able to be more cooperative and be willing to express more emotion that anger. For many teenagers, this may be the first time they recognize the ir ethnic identity. Ethnic identity includes the shared value of tradition, value, and practices of a cultural group. Feeling positive towards an ethic identity is important towards self- esteem of an adolescents. This can also be difficult challenge for adolescents from minority cultures, because they are often faced with negative stereotypes about their culture (ReCAPP, 2017).
